Lost in Space? Relativistic Interstellar Navigation using an Astrometric Star Catalog

چکیده
The exploration of interstellar space will require autonomous navigation systems that do not rely on tracking from the Earth. Here I develop a method to determine 3D position and velocity spacecraft in deep using star catalog. As moves away Sun, observed positions velocities stars change relative those Earth-based catalog due parallax aberration. By measuring just angular distances between pairs stars, comparing these catalog, we can infer coordinates via an iterative forward-modeling process. perform simulations with existing catalogs demonstrate compute its performance. Using 20 nearest modest distance measurement accuracy 1'', light years Sun moving at relativistic speeds be determined within 3 2 respectively. These accuracies improve linearly accuracy, e.g., angles measured 1 is 1000 times better. Performance also improved more or by including onboard measurements stars' radial velocities, as too are affected spacecraft's motion.

Treatment of star catalog biases in asteroid astrometric observations
In this paper, we discuss the detection of systematic biases in star positions of the USNO A1.0, A2.0, and B1.0 catalogs, as deduced from the residuals of numbered asteroid observations. We present a technique for the removal of these biases, and validate this technique by illustrating the resulting improvements in numbered asteroid residuals, and by establishing that debiased orbits predict om...

Due to rapid growth of urbanization and economic demand, we are continuously losing our fields, our free lands, open sky, ponds, lakes; actually our breathing spaces. متن کاملThe UCAC3 Star Catalog: A New Catalog of Optical Reference Stars for Space Surveillance
Version three of the U.S. Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC3) was released in August 2009. As the first version of the UCAC to cover the entire sky, UCAC3 is a suitable source of optical reference stars in the R = 8 to 16 magnitude range. Containing just over 100 million objects and providing stellar positional accuracies of about 15 to 100 milliarcseconds (mas) per coordinate, UCA...
